The castle
A fourteenth century moated castle now partly serving as the town hall. Hospitality operates in and around it, and it is the image the town presents.
Brabant basics
Worstenbroodjes at every bakery, frikandel at every chip shop, and carnival as a fixed point in the year. Helmond becomes Keiebijters.
The Peel
Peat country east of the town, with farm shops and asparagus in spring. Deurne and Asten are the supply route.
Industrial past
Textiles and metal shaped the town into the 1970s. Some workers’ cafés from that period survive and have stayed plain.
