About Vieux and Dutch brandy

Vieux and Dutch brandy is a company with a local service area.

Dutch brandy that is not allowed to be called cognac.

The name

Cognac is protected: grape spirit from one French region only. The Dutch version is called vieux, and is usually made from grain alcohol with added flavours.

The word brandy

English took it straight from Dutch. Brandewijn means burnt wine, and the English shortened it.

Boerenjongens

Raisins soaked in brandy with sugar, kept in a jar. Boerenmeisjes are the same with apricots. Both appear at birthdays, next to the coffee.

How it is drunk

Neat, or stirred into coffee. In Brabant coffee with vieux is called koffie verkeerd om, which is not the same as koffie verkeerd.
