| Advocaat is a company with a local service area. | |
Thick enough to need a spoon.
Where the name comes from
Not from lawyers. Most likely from the Portuguese abacate, avocado. Dutch colonists in Suriname made a drink from avocado, and back home, where the fruit was unavailable, they used egg yolk instead.
Two versions
Thick advocaat, heavy on yolk, eaten with a small spoon.
Thin advocaat, made with cream, poured into a glass.
The cream
A swirl of whipped cream is not optional. With the thick version a small waffle biscuit comes with it.
When
At birthdays, alongside coffee, and in summer over vanilla ice cream. That last combination is called a dame blanche met advocaat.
