The borrel came first, the spritz arrived later.
The borrel
The Dutch pre-dinner drink, traditionally jenever or beer with something salty. The word covers the drink, the snacks and the social occasion at once.
The spritz
Italian in origin, and on every Dutch terrace since roughly 2015. Aperol with prosecco and soda, served in a large wine glass with ice and an orange slice.
Vermouth
Ordering vermouth on ice with a twist has become common in the last few years, helped by small Dutch producers making their own.
The snacks
Bitterballen, cheese cubes with mustard, olives. A borrelplank is the shared board that brings all of it at once.
The timing
Between five and seven, before dinner and not instead of it.
