About Fruit wine and cider

Fruit wine and cider is a company with a local service area.

Before grape wine there was fruit wine, and it never quite disappeared.

The tradition

Elderberry, blackcurrant, apple and pear wines were made across rural Netherlands for centuries, because grapes would not ripen and fruit would.

The Betuwe

The river region between the Rhine and the Waal is the country’s orchard. Apple and pear ciders from there have grown into a small but serious category.

Cider versus appelwijn

Cider is lightly sparkling and lower in alcohol.

Appelwijn is still, stronger, and closer to wine in structure.

What to eat with it

Pork, aged cheese, and anything with apple in it.

Where to find it

At farm shops and increasingly on restaurant lists as the local alternative to imported wine.
