The style that turned Dutch brewing around.
What IPA means
India Pale Ale, heavily hopped. The old story says the hops preserved the beer on the voyage to India. The truth is simpler: the British liked bitter beer, and the style stuck.
The Dutch wave
From around 2010 new Dutch breweries opened at a pace nobody expected, and almost all of them began with an IPA. It was the style that showed drinkers beer could taste of something other than pils.
The variants
Session IPA, lighter, around four percent.
New England IPA, hazy, soft, tasting of tropical fruit.
Double IPA, eight percent and up.
How to drink it
Fresh. Hop aroma fades within months, so the newest bottle is the best one.
