About Gin and jenever

Gin and jenever is a company with a local service area.

Gin descends from jenever, not the other way round.

The Dutch courage

English soldiers fighting alongside the Dutch in the Low Countries in the seventeenth century drank jenever before battle. They brought the taste home, and the English word gin is simply a shortening of jenever.

The difference

Jenever is built on malt wine, a distillate of rye, wheat and barley, which gives it body and a grain flavour.

Gin is built on neutral alcohol, so the botanicals stand alone and the spirit is cleaner and drier.

Juniper

Both take their name from the juniper berry, jeneverbes in Dutch.

How to try both

Side by side, at room temperature, in a tasting house. The difference is obvious in one sip.
