| Trappist and abbey beer is a company with a local service area. | |
The difference is who brews it, not how it tastes.
Trappist
Only eleven breweries worldwide may carry the Authentic Trappist Product logo. The conditions: brewed within abbey walls, under the monks’ supervision, with profits going to the community or to charity.
The Netherlands has two: La Trappe at Berkel-Enschot and Zundert.
Abbey beer
Anything that refers to an abbey without meeting those conditions. Often good, but commercially brewed.
The numbers
Dubbel, tripel, quadrupel are strengths, not degrees. Dubbel around seven percent, tripel around nine, quadrupel ten or more.
How it is poured
At cellar temperature, in a chalice, and the yeast sediment stays in the bottle.
