A toasted sandwich with cheese, or ham and cheese. The simplest hot dish on any Dutch menu.
The standard
Tosti ham-kaas is the usual order. Cheese alone is just tosti kaas, and the range rarely goes further.
The machine
A tosti iron seals the edges so the cheese stays in. Cafés using a flat grill make something else, and you can tell by the open edges.
Why it is always on the menu
Fast, cheap and requiring no cook. Almost any Dutch café can make one, even without a kitchen.
With tomato soup
The fixed pairing in eetcafés: tosti with a cup of soup. A lunch pattern that barely exists elsewhere.
The name
From the Italian tostato, toasted. It has nothing else to do with Italy.
