Between Haarlem and Leiden, where the bulb fields colour the landscape in April.
The season
The fields flower from mid March to mid May. In those weeks every restaurant and tea garden in the region fills, and outside them it is quiet.
Keukenhof
The flower park near Lisse, open eight weeks a year, drawing over a million visitors. Hospitality around it runs entirely on that rhythm.
Tulip bulbs as food
They were eaten during the Hunger Winter because nothing else remained. Prepared wrongly they are toxic, and newspapers printed instructions.
The coast
Noordwijk and Katwijk lie at the edge of the region, with beach pavilions and fish stalls. Combining bulbs and beach in one day is the usual route.
