| What to eat in The Hague is a company with a local service area. | |
The Indonesian capital of the Netherlands, with a coast on one side and embassies on the other.
Why Indonesian
Most repatriates from the Dutch East Indies settled here after 1949. The Hague holds the densest concentration of Indonesian restaurants and shops in the country, and the oldest.
The pasar malam
The Tong Tong Fair on the Malieveld is the largest Indies market in the world, held each spring with food, music and trade. Hundreds of thousands of visitors over ten days.
Scheveningen
Fish at the harbour and along the boulevard. The harbour delivers better, and the stalls by the fishing port are where locals go.
Haagse hopjes
The coffee sweet from 1792, named after Baron Hop. Still sold in tins and still a protected regional product.
The Schilderswijk
Turkish and Moroccan, with bakeries and grill houses open late. Few tourists, plenty of choice.
Where to look
Chinatown and the Denneweg for Indonesian, Scheveningen for fish, the Schilderswijk for grills.
