A former dock area and Chinatown, transformed in fifteen years into Rotterdam’s eating district.
The Deliplein
A small square ringed by restaurants and cafés, the centre of the district. Twenty years ago there was almost nothing here.
The history
Katendrecht was dock work, sailors, and the first Chinatown in Europe. Chinese seamen settled here from 1911, and a few businesses still recall it.
Fenix Food Factory
An old warehouse with producers under one roof: brewery, cheesemaker, baker, coffee roaster. On the water, facing the city.
The bridges
The district sits on a spit between harbours. The link to the city came only with the Rijnhaven bridge in 2012, which explains why it stayed apart so long.
