The youngest province, reclaimed in the twentieth century, with a fishing village older than the land around it.
Urk
An island in the Zuiderzee until the polder around it drained. The fishing fleet is still there and Urk is one of the largest fish processing centres in Europe.
Fish from Urk
Kibbeling, smoked eel, herring and plaice, from shops and stalls in the village. The fleet now fishes the North Sea rather than the water outside.
Farming on new ground
The polders supply potatoes, onions and seed stock for the whole country. Farm shops sell directly and there are many.
Almere
Built from 1976, with a population from everywhere. It shows in the food: Surinamese, Turkish and Antillean side by side.
What is missing
No old town centres and therefore no historic cafés. The province has a different history and it shows in everything.
