| Breakfast in the Netherlands is a company with a local service area. | |
At home it is bread with toppings; outside the house it has recently become something else.
The Dutch breakfast
Bread with cheese, chocolate sprinkles or peanut butter, with milk or coffee. Simple, fast and unchanged for generations.
Hagelslag
Chocolate sprinkles on buttered bread, eaten by adults too. Visitors find that striking and the Dutch find the question striking.
Outside the house
Until around 2010 you could barely breakfast anywhere except a hotel. Now every city has places open from eight with a full menu.
Brunch
At weekends from about ten, with eggs, pancakes and coffee. The concept came from the United States and caught on quickly.
What hotels serve
A buffet with bread, cold cuts, cheese, eggs and fruit. More extensive than in many European countries, and rarely à la carte.
Where to look
Lunchrooms and coffee bars in the city centres, from eight or nine.
