Former peat country on the Brabant-Limburg border, with asparagus, farm shops and little crowding.
Asparagus
The sandy soil yields white spears from April to 24 June. Most fields lie around Horst and Venray, and restaurants build menus on them.
The peat
The Peel was marsh and was dug out. What remains is farmland with fragments of raised bog now protected.
Intensive livestock
This region has the highest livestock density in the Netherlands. That brings argument, and at the same time farm shops selling meat straight from the producer.
Brabant and Limburg at once
The border runs straight through. Worstenbroodjes and vlaai sit side by side, and carnival is celebrated on both sides.
