| Turkish and Moroccan food is a company with a local service area. | |
Present since the labour migration of the 1960s, and now as ordinary as the snack bar.
How it started
The Netherlands recruited workers in Turkey and Morocco from 1964. What was meant as temporary became permanent, and the first shops and restaurants followed in the 1970s.
The shawarma shop
On every corner, open late, with rolls, plates and kapsalon. It has become the country’s evening formula, more so than the snack bar.
Turkish bakeries
Fresh bread, pide, börek and sweets, often warm all day. They open early and in some districts are the first thing trading.
Moroccan tea houses
Mint tea, harira in winter, and pastries. Quieter than the grill houses and with a different crowd.
Where the density is
Rotterdam South, the Schilderswijk in The Hague, Amsterdam West and Kanaalstraat in Utrecht. Widest choice and lowest prices.
Where to look
Those districts, and any city with a postwar working class quarter.
