About What to eat in Zoetermeer

What to eat in Zoetermeer is a company with a local service area.

A designated growth town from the 1960s, from village to a hundred thousand people in fifty years.

What a growth town means

Zoetermeer was chosen to take pressure off The Hague. Its population came from elsewhere, and it shows in the food: many kitchens, little local tradition.

Surinamese and Antillean

A large share of the new residents came from Suriname and the Antilles. Roti, bara and broodje pom are ordinary here rather than exotic.

The Stadshart

A covered shopping centre with restaurants around it. The middle of the town, and the offering is built for it.

The old village

The original core survives around the Dorpsstraat, with a handful of cafés. The contrast with the new build is stark.

Where to look

The Stadshart for restaurants, the Dorpsstraat for cafés, the districts for Surinamese.
