Once the tip breaks through it turns purple and must already have been cut.<\/p>\n<h2>The handwork<\/h2>\n<p>Cutting is done by hand, daily, with a special knife. Machines cannot do it, which explains the price.<\/p>\n<h2>The 24th of June<\/h2>\n<p>The season ends on St John&#8217;s day, not a day later. After that the plant must recover for next year, and the date is strictly kept.<\/p>\n<h2>The classic plate<\/h2>\n<p>Boiled asparagus with ham, egg, melted butter and potatoes. Restaurants in Limburg and Brabant build whole menus on it.<\/p>\n<h2>Where they grow<\/h2>\n<p>The sandy soils near Venlo, Horst and the Peel, and the Brabantse Wal near Bergen op Zoom.
