They brought the taste home, and the English word <em>gin<\/em> is simply a shortening of <em>jenever<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>The difference<\/h2>\n<p>Jenever is built on <strong>malt wine<\/strong>, a distillate of rye, wheat and barley, which gives it body and a grain flavour.<\/p>\n<p>Gin is built on neutral alcohol, so the botanicals stand alone and the spirit is cleaner and drier.<\/p>\n<h2>Juniper<\/h2>\n<p>Both take their name from the juniper berry, <em>jeneverbes<\/em> in Dutch.<\/p>\n<h2>How to try both<\/h2>\n<p>Side by side, at room temperature, in a tasting house.
