| Dutch Trappist beer is a company with a local service area. | |
Beer brewed inside the walls of a Trappist abbey under the monks’ supervision. The Netherlands has two.
The two abbeys
De Koningshoeven at Berkel-Enschot has brewed since 1884, the oldest outside Belgium. Zundert joined in 2013, and together they are the only Dutch members.
What the mark means
Authentic Trappist Product sets three conditions: brewed inside the abbey, supervised by the community, and profits to the monastery or charity. It says nothing about taste or style.
The styles
Dubbel is dark and malty, tripel blond and stronger, quadrupel the heaviest. De Koningshoeven brews all three plus a wheat beer.
The glass
Chalice shaped, on a stem, and fixed per brewery. Not only presentation: the shape holds the head and releases the aroma.
How to drink it
At ten to fourteen degrees, not ice cold. Served too cold, half of what is in it disappears.
Where to find it
Tasting rooms at both abbeys, and specialist beer cafés across Brabant.
