About Indonesian food in the Netherlands

Indonesian food in the Netherlands is a company with a local service area.

Not a foreign cuisine but a Dutch one, grown out of three hundred years of colonial history.

Indisch or Indonesian

Indisch is the Dutch-Indonesian hybrid that came with repatriates. Indonesian is the cuisine of the country itself. Restaurants use both words and they do not mean the same thing.

The Hague as centre

After 1949 around three hundred thousand people came from the Dutch East Indies, and many settled in The Hague. The city holds the oldest and densest concentration.

The rijsttafel

A colonial invention: dozens of dishes at once to impress guests. Indonesians do not eat this way.

The toko

Shops with spices, sambal, crackers and ready dishes. The starting point for cooking at home, and they exist in every large city.

Pasar malam

Evening markets with food, music and trade, held in summer. The Tong Tong Fair in The Hague is the largest in the world.

Where to look

The Hague for the oldest places, Amsterdam for the most, tokos for ingredients.
