The name
The streets are named after places in the Dutch East Indies: Lombok, Bali, Java. The district was built in the late nineteenth century, in colonial times.
Who came
Labour migrants from Turkey and Morocco from the 1960s, later students too. That mix sets the offering: cheap, open late, plenty of choice.
The prices
Noticeably lower than in the centre, ten minutes’ walk away. For students that is the reason to live and eat here.
