Alblasserdam has 60 places, of which 39 give opening hours, 65 per cent. Of those, 56 per cent open on a Sunday and 31 per cent work past eleven. Some 35 per cent have no online presence.
The by-law says it plainly: the municipality’s policy is to grant no exemptions for Sundays. Shops therefore stay shut, and the few permissions that do exist expressly do not apply to Sundays. Yet the same municipality lets hospitality carry on until two on Saturdays and Sundays, against one midweek. Anyone running a restaurant here may open longer on a Sunday than on a Monday, and that nearly half stay closed anyway is a judgement of their own.
The village works on the water. There is a yard here among the best known yacht builders in Europe, and the river has always been the employer.
About the windmills something should be put right. The world heritage of Kinderdijk lies largely in the neighbouring municipality of Molenlanden; of the ensemble exactly one mill stands on Alblasserdam ground. The village is therefore a neighbour of those mills and not their owner, even though some of the visitors do come past this way.
The municipality is independent for now; on whether it can stay so the council means to give an answer within a few years. Of the 20,250 residents, 21 per cent are over sixty-five.
