Boxtel has 98 places, of which 73 publish opening hours, 74 per cent. Of those, 82 per cent open on a Sunday and 40 per cent work past eleven, the highest night share among these fourteen places. Some 27 per cent have no online presence.
Two things can be named for that night figure, and together they form a mechanism. The by-law sets closing at two, with an exemption in the hospitality concentration zone until three on the nights before Saturday and Sunday, and terraces there allowed open until two. On top of that, the largest Dutch site of a meat company runs here, handling around 90,000 pigs a week with some 1,700 staff on shifts; that firm’s head office is in Boxtel as well.
The place owes its existence to the railway. The station opened here on 1 May 1865, and because the government found ‘s-Hertogenbosch too far north, Boxtel became the junction: within a few years the lines to Den Bosch, Eindhoven and Wesel were added.
Since 1 January 2021 the village of Esch has belonged to the municipality too, after Haaren was dissolved.
Boxtel has no dish of its own; the Bossche bol belongs ten kilometres away. The town counts 27,320 residents, the municipality 34,302, and a quarter are over sixty-five.
