Rheden has 25 places. Opening hours are given by 19 of them; of those, 17 open on a Sunday and 2 work past eleven. A website of their own is held by 19, and 5 cannot be found online at all.
Seventeen of nineteen on a Sunday and two past eleven: full by day, empty by evening. The by-law contains a provision that fits. Article 2:28 requires an operating permit for hospitality premises and obliges the mayor to refuse one where the use conflicts with the environment plan; at the same time premises can be exempted from that permit requirement if there have been no incidents in the preceding six months. Quiet, here, earns less paperwork. Article 2:30 additionally allows the mayor to impose different times on an individual establishment.
The village is called Rheton in 960. That is old, but not the oldest in this municipality, which surprised us: Velp is named around 800 and Dieren in 838, so our assumption that the village giving the municipality its name came first turned out to be wrong. The parish church is dedicated to St Mauritius and not to St Peter, as is sometimes written. A ferry still crosses the IJssel; the present crossing dates from about 1969, the boat ran from 1 May 1972 as the MAJA and has been called the WUTA since 1986, short for wait your turn. The cooking is Veluwe cooking and rich in game in autumn: venison, boar, mushrooms from the woods above.
