Where Rotterdam has no sandwich of its own, Tilburg does, with a name and an inventor. In 1965 Jan de Kort devised the broodje Jantje near the station: a roll with mince seasoned his own way, a sharp tomato sauce and onion, in a crust that cracks.
De Kort kept the business some thirty-five years and then sold both firm and recipe; the stand moved to another square and still works at carnival and at home matches. Over the years a whole family of variants appeared, each with a nickname of its own.
It is no classic daytime sandwich shop but a crossing with the snack bar; the city does thereby have a sandwich canon of its own, and in the Netherlands that is rare.
