About Portuguese and Cape Verdean food

Portuguese and Cape Verdean food is a company with a local service area.

Two cuisines that reached the Netherlands through the port of Rotterdam and stayed.

Cape Verdeans in Rotterdam

The largest Cape Verdean community in Europe is here, formed as sailors signed on to Rotterdam ships. Delfshaven and the south are the core.

Cachupa

A stew of corn, beans, vegetables and meat or fish, cooked for hours. The national dish of Cape Verde, found in Rotterdam on Sundays.

Portuguese

Salt cod in dozens of preparations, grilled sardines, custard tarts. The community is smaller but the businesses have been here for decades.

Pastéis de nata

Puff pastry tarts with custard, baked hot and fast so the top blisters. Available fresh at Portuguese bakers in Rotterdam and The Hague.

The port connection

Both cuisines arrived through harbour work rather than tourism or colonial ties. That explains why they sit in Rotterdam and not Amsterdam.

Where to look

Rotterdam South and Delfshaven, and The Hague for Portuguese bakers.
