About Vietnamese food in the Netherlands

Vietnamese food in the Netherlands is a company with a local service area.

Small but growing, with pho as the dish that made the cuisine known.

How it arrived

Vietnamese boat refugees came to the Netherlands from 1979, around twelve hundred people. Some later opened restaurants, often starting with a Chinese-Indonesian menu.

Pho

A broth simmered for hours, with rice noodles, beef and fresh herbs alongside. Quality depends entirely on the broth, and that is not a cliché.

Banh mi

A roll with pâté, vegetables and coriander in a French baguette. Vietnam’s colonial past sits literally in the bread.

The Hague Chinatown

Around the Wagenstraat Vietnamese places sit beside Chinese and Indonesian ones. The concentration is higher there than anywhere.

What comes alongside

Fresh herbs, lime and chilli arrive separately and you add them yourself. That is intended rather than a choice by the cook.

Where to look

The Hague and Amsterdam for the most places, and the newer cities for recent openings.
