Wormerveer has 60 places, of which 47 give opening hours, 78 per cent. Of those, 81 per cent open on a Sunday and 32 per cent work past eleven. Some 27 per cent have no online presence.
Sunday here is among the widest in the country: the by-law of 2022 grants a general exemption from six in the morning until ten at night, sixteen hours together. The night is soberer. Light hospitality closes at midnight and the rest at two, and the extension until five that the municipality allows applies only in the going-out district of Zaandam, so not here.
The name comes from a ferry. In the fourteenth century the crossing to the village of Wormer on the far side of the Zaan lay here, and the place grew around it; in 1503 it was officially founded and in 1574 wholly destroyed by Spanish troops and rebuilt.
What came afterwards was oil, paper and cocoa. Some 47 oil mills were built here at the residents’ expense, and the nineteenth century brought works for cocoa, chocolate and paper. The mills have gone but for one or two, though the cocoa silos still stand as monuments, and it is worth knowing that the open-air museum with the well known green houses lies across the water and not here.
Of the 12,735 residents, 22 per cent are over sixty-five. The cheese with a European name carries that of the province.
