The beginning can be dated precisely. In June 1911 Chinese seamen were brought to the Netherlands to break a strike, and boarding houses for them grew up around the Binnen Bantammerstraat; among Chinese the street acquired a name of its own. After the crash of 1929 unemployed sailors stood in the streets selling peanut biscuits, some 200 of them in this city alone.
The first Chinese eating house in the country was not here but in Rotterdam, in 1920. Amsterdam followed in 1928, with the first place where non-Chinese guests were welcome as well. The Chinese-Indonesian restaurant that grew out of it is a Dutch invention, formed when repatriates from Indonesia helped shape the menu after the war.
